Gateway to TEFL:
TEFL Certificate

Gateway to TEFL is our pioneering TEFL certificate programme for aspiring teachers of English as a Foreign Language. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

The Gateway to TEFL is made up of three modules:

  • Module 1: Understanding Language Systems and Skills

  • Module 2: Teaching and Managing the Classroom

  • Module 3: Next Steps and Career Development

This is a distance-learning course and you complete work at your own pace. There are no fixed dates and you can start whenever you wish.

Objectives

​​​

The objectives of module 1 are:

1. To develop an understanding of “language systems” and how language works

2. To understand what “parts of speech” are. 

3. To know the language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

4. To become familiar with language examinations.

5. To understand learner levels.

​

The objectives of modules 2 are:

1 To develop the skills needed for successful classroom management.

2. To build the ideas, tools and techniques needed for teaching language skills and systems.

3. To know what tasks can be used to ensure engaging and impactful teaching for language skills and language systems.

4. To be able to use published materials and create your own.

5. To be able to create lesson plans and structure lessons tailored for your learners.

6. To be able to correct learner errors empathetically and in a non-threatening way.

The objectives of module 3 are:

1. To understand ways in which you can pursue a career in ELT including further qualifications.

2. To understand a range of specialisms that English teachers might move into.

3. To gain ideas for finding work in ELT. 

4. To know the role that conferences play in teacher development.
 

Duration

The course will take approximately 20 hours to complete.

​

Suitability

​​

The course is suitable for anyone who:

  • Is keen to take an initial TEFL qualification ​

  • Wishes to develop their knowledge of language, language skills, language systems and teaching

  • Is considering teaching internationally on an employed or voluntary basis

  • Wants to discover if the world of TEFL is suitable for them

Assessment 

​​​

Each module is assessed by a range of tasks:

  • Module 1's assessments will test your knowledge of language systems

  • Module 2's assessments involve handling of teaching material and production of lesson plans

  • Module 3's assessments call upon you to plan your future career path

You will receive written feedback and recommendations on your work.​​​​​​​​​​​​
