Innovation and Design Thinking

Innovation is a critical success factors for modern organisations. As such, it is a subject that our course participants on language courses will need to be able to discuss as well as a great theme for participants on higher level courses.

 

This self-directed course will provide teachers and trainers with ideas and concepts needed for effectively training innovation and Design thinking and using innovation tools and Design thinking frameworks as language training tasks or for training innovation and Design Thinking as a subject in its own right.

Course Objectives

 

1. To understand the true meaning of innovation, its value and benefits, opportunities for innovation and barriers that may be encountered and utilise a range of tools, frameworks and approaches for innovation in the workplace.

2. To understand the meaning, principles, benefits and stages of Design Thinking. 

3. To be able to use empathy as the starting point of the Design Thinking process.

4. To be able to accurately define a problem or challenge as part of the Design Thinking process using relevant tools and approaches to ensure a fuller understanding of the issues faced.

5. To know what is involved in ideation, methods and approaches for ideation and the value it creates in Design Thinking. 

6. To understand the purpose of prototyping and the forms that prototypes may take in Design Thinking.

7. To be able to handle testing in Design Thinking and know how this may be conducted.

8. To be able to train innovation and Design Thinking as direct subjects or as a theme or carrier for language in Business English training contexts.
 

Who Should Study the Certificate in Training Innovation and Design Thinking?

 

The course will appeal to trainers who wish to learn more about innovation and Design Thinking for use in training as a carrier for language in the form of training tasks or as a standalone subject area.

Course Content

 

The course has the following content:
• Innovation, invention, exnovation and overengineering
• Techniques for training innovation and why it should be trained
• The benefits of innovation, opportunities for innovation and barriers
• Measuring innovation and KPIs
• The innovation canvas, the SCAMPER technique and ERRC matrix
• Innovation and proposal writing

• The meaning of Design Thinking and its five stages (empathising, defining, ideating, prototyping, testing)

• Using empathy in Design Thinking

• Defining using problem statements, hypotheses, touchpoints, journey maps and root cause analysis

• Ideating using brainstorming, crazy eights and reverse thinking 

• Prototypes and fidelity levels​

• Testing methodologies

• Creating action plans as a training output

Assessment

 

The course is assessed by a short assignment involving preparation of a training session focusing on the theme of innovation and Design Thinking.
