One of many strands of ESP (English for Specific Purposes), Military English is a complex area that can, at first glance, be intimidating for teachers and trainers. This practical self-directed course is aimed at teachers wishing to teach or train participants from military forces or in roles connected to defence or the military.

1. To understand what forms Military English might take
2. To consider the contexts in which it might be taught or trained, who our trainees might be and their motivations.
3. To know how levels may be measured in Military English and to understand the workings of NATO STANAG 6001.
4. To develop competences for teaching language skills and systems in Military English.
5. To understand the role of carrier content and real content in Military English classes.

The course is assessed by a short assignment involving preparation of a training session focused on Military English
