CTME - Certificate in Teaching Military English

Overview

One of many strands of ESP (English for Specific Purposes), Military English is a complex area that can, at first glance, be intimidating for teachers and trainers. This practical self-directed distance learning course is aimed at teachers wishing to teach or train participants from military forces or in roles connected to defence or the military.  

Course Type

This is a self-directed distance learning course that you complete at your own pace. You have one year from the start of the course in which to complete all units and the final assignment. You can start the course at any time.

Learning Hours

 

The course will take around 18 hours including study, end-of-unit tasks and assignment completion.

Course Structure

The course is composed of 8 units, each with an end-of-unit task to complete; you will receive written feedback from a learning mentor for each end-of-unit task. The units are:

1. Understanding Military English.

2. Levels and NATO STANAG 6001.

3. Materials for Military English.

4. Teaching Skills in Military English.

5. Teaching Grammar in Military English.

6. Technology in Military English Teaching.

7. Going Beyond Language in Military English Teaching.

8. Assessment and Professional Development.

Course Objectives

 

1. To develop teachers’ understanding of Military English as a branch of ESP, including its absolute and variable characteristics. 

2. To enable teachers to conduct effective needs analyses for military learners, including identifying roles, tasks, proficiency levels and operational requirements.  

3. To familiarise teachers with the three categories of Military English and their implications for course design.  

4. To strengthen teachers’ understanding of the diverse profiles, motivations and mindsets of military learners and apply this knowledge to classroom management and lesson design.  

5. To ensure teachers understand professional conduct, ethics, safety, trauma‑informed practice and boundaries when working in military environments.  

6. To develop teachers’ knowledge of STANAG 6001 levels and descriptors and apply them to lesson planning, task design and assessment.  

7. To strengthen teachers’ ability to select, use, supplement, adapt and reject published or assigned materials using the USAR framework in military‑specific contexts.  

8. To develop teachers’ ability to integrate technology into Military English teaching using the SAMR model, including effective use of VR / AR and AI to enhance authenticity and operational relevance.  

9. To equip teachers with strategies for designing and delivering skills‑based lessons that reflect authentic military communication.  

10. To support teachers in creating, adapting and evaluating Military English materials that are operationally relevant and pedagogically sound.

Final Assessment

 

The course is assessed by an individual assignment of 3000 to 4000 words focusing on one of the following:

• Creation of a full scheme of work for an assigned Military English group 
• Design of a lesson plan for six hours of Military English teaching 
• Preparing Military English course material integrating intercultural communication 
• Production  of a written proposal for a 30-hour Military English programme

 

All assignments involve providing a full rationale for any ideas, concepts, methods, materials, tasks and frameworks suggested.

You will receive full written feedback on your assignment from two experienced Military English teaching professionals.

Fees
