This practical self-directed course is aimed at teachers wishing to teach or train participants from military forces or in roles connected to defence or the military.

Course Objectives
​1. To develop teachers’ understanding of Military English as a branch of ESP and its absolute and variable characteristics.
2. To develop teachers’ knowledge of NATO, NATO BILC and STANAG 6001, and to apply this knowledge effectively in lesson planning, teaching and assessment.
3. To equip teachers with the skills to conduct needs analyses and design Military English courses aligned to operational requirements and STANAG 6001.
4. To familiarise teachers with the contexts and scenarios in which Military English is used in real‑world military and multinational environments.
5. To enable teachers to identify the diverse profiles, motivations and learning needs of students and trainees on Military English courses.
6. To build teachers’ confidence in working with military‑related carrier content while focusing on the real linguistic content required for effective instruction.
7. To strengthen teachers’ ability to manage classrooms in military environments.
8. To ensure teachers understand ethical, security-related and professional boundaries when teaching in military or defence‑related settings.
9. To enhance teachers’ ability to teach skills, grammar, pronunciation and functional language within military contexts.
10. To design and facilitate roleplays, simulations, video‑based tasks and operationally relevant activities that reflect real military communication.
11. To integrate technology, audio, video and excursions into Military English training in a pedagogically sound manner.
12. To support teachers in developing professional competencies relevant to Military English.

Assessment
The course is assessed by an individual assignment of 3000 to 4000 words focusing on one of the following:
• Creation of a full scheme of work for an assigned Military English group
• Design of a lesson plan for six hours of Military English teaching
• Preparing Military English course material integrating intercultural communication
• Prodiuction written proposal for a 30-hour
All assignments involve providing a full rationale for any ideas, concepts, methods, materials, tasks and frameworks suggested.
