
CTNS - Certificate in Training Negotiation Skills
Overview
Negotiating has long been treated as one of major communicative functions we teach and train in business English. To be an effective negotiator requires a range of linguistic, functional and interpersonal competences linked to vocabulary and lexis for negotiating, strategy, tactics, key acronyms and initialisms and much more. This course will provide teachers and trainers with all of the essential knowledge they need to train negotiation skills and grow negotiators as well as acting as a rich source of ideas for training room tasks. The course also features content on mediation allowing for even more training room content and competence development.
Course Type
This is a self-directed distance learning course that you complete at your own pace. You have one year from the start of the course in which to complete all units and the final assignment. You can start the course at any time.
Learning Hours
The course will take around 18 hours including study, end-of-unit tasks and assignment completion.
Course Structure
The course is composed of 9 units, each with an end-of-unit task to complete; you will receive written feedback from a learning mentor for each end-of-unit task. The units are:

4. Training Methodologies for Negotiation Skills
5. Negotiations and Intercultural Skills
6. Working with Procurement Professionals
7. Training Selling Skills
8. Training Mediation Skills
9. Assessing Negotiation Skills
Course Objectives
1. To understand what negotiations truly involve and the different forms negotiations may take.
2. To be able to discuss negotiation strategies and tactics and train others to both identify and use these.
3. To understand the jargon of negotiations including commonly used acronyms.
4. To be able to train vocabulary, lexis and grammar for use in negotiations.
5. To be able to design tasks including roleplays and simulations for use in negotiation training.
6. To be able to develop intercultural communication skills for negotiations.
7. To know a range of approaches to selling and to be able to develop the selling skills of course participants.
8. To understand the concept, purpose and stages of mediation, tools used by mediators and to be able to train mediation skills and mediation as a business function.
9. To know the range of ways in which negotiation skills can be assessed.

● Creating roleplays and simulations for negotiations skills training
● Intercultural negotiations and cultural variables affecting negotiations
● Types of selling and training selling skills
● Mediation tools and approaches for conflict resolution or supporting others in negotiations
● Using AI tools for creating your own negotiation and mediation scenarios
● Working with procurement professionals
● Encouraging post-task reflection in negotiations and mediations

Assessment
The course is assessed by a 3000 to 4000 word assignment focusing on one of four options each involving an aspect of negotiation skills training.
